Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about deployment, integration, and security.

Can I try Oralio before committing?

Yes. We offer a pilot programme β€” one module, one cohort, formative only. No procurement needed. We provide everything: LTI integration, DPIA template, onboarding session.

Is this more work for instructors?

Less. A manual viva takes 28-35 minutes per student. Oralio produces a transcript-first evidence pack in 5-9 minutes. Educators review transcripts, not conduct live sessions.

Which LMS platforms are supported?

Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard via LTI 1.3. The tool works inside your existing LMS β€” no separate login required.

How does the AI generate questions?

The AI reads the student's actual submission and the module rubric, then generates contextual questions specific to that student's work. Educators can review and modify questions before they go live.

Can students game the system?

Oralio requires students to explain their own reasoning in real-time. The conversation adapts β€” surface-level answers trigger deeper probes. This is something generative AI cannot do for them.

What about bias against international students?

This is exactly why we built Oralio. AI detection tools have documented 61% false positive rates for non-native speakers. Oralio does not assess language quality β€” it assesses understanding of subject matter.

What about students with disabilities?

Reasonable adjustments are built in: extra time, pause and resume, text mode, no camera requirement, multilingual support. Adjustments can be configured per-student or per-assignment.

Where is my data stored?

All data is stored on Azure UK. Each institution gets isolated storage. No data is transferred outside the UK. Azure infrastructure holds ISO 27001, 27017, and 27018 certifications.

Does the AI make pass/fail decisions?

Never. The AI conducts the conversation and produces evidence. Every final assessment decision is made by a human educator. AI flags uncertain cases for additional review.

We already use Turnitin - is this different?

Turnitin catches copying. It does not catch understanding. A student can use ChatGPT to produce original text that passes Turnitin cleanly. Oralio asks them to explain what they wrote. The two tools are complementary.

Cannot we just do this with ChatGPT?

ChatGPT can have a conversation. It cannot read a student's specific submission, align questions to your rubric, produce a compliant audit trail, sync grades to your LMS, or apply reasonable adjustments securely.

What happens if we stop using Oralio?

Every transcript and evidence pack is exportable in standard formats at any time. Nothing is locked in. Your data is always yours.

How much does it cost?

Pilot is free β€” one module, one cohort. Institutional pricing is based on student numbers and starts after a successful pilot.

Who is behind Oralio?

Oralio was founded by Charan Puvvala, with a background in building technology for education. We are currently piloting with the University of Portsmouth and working with JISC frameworks.
